I like to use Excel's Conditional Formatting to:
1) Dynamically highlight the cells that meet my criteria e.g. Above Average, 5 highest values, etc.
2) Apply special formatting to my spreadsheet - e.g. shade every other row to make it easier to read the data.

Excel introduced the valuable - but underutilized - List Command in version 2003. In version 2007, Lists are now called "Tables."
